Introduction to Selection of Valve Body Materials

The selection of steel and nickel alloy body and bonnet materials is listed in Table 1 of ASMEB16.34. This table is divided into three groups: Group 1 is made of ferrous metal materials; Group 2 is austenitic stainless steel material; Group 3 is a group of nickel alloy materials related to a specific pressure temperature rating table. Other materials are contained in ASMEB16.1 (cast iron), ASMEB16.24 (copper alloy), and ASMEB16.42 (ductile iron).

Notes in the table that address the temperature and heat treatment range require special attention. By referring to these temperature pressure gauges, the pressure temperature ratings provide a basis for selecting reasonable mechanical strength requirements. In addition, materials should also be considered for many mechanisms of material performance degradation that exist under process fluid flow conditions, such as corrosion, stress cracking, low and high temperatures, and hydrogen containing conditions.
